Derek Rowcliffe
I graduated from Graphic Design at the St. Lawrence College. After working freelance for 6 months, I went on to design at Eikon Device, a international tattoo supply company, where I worked for two years.
I balanced my day job with personal creative work, making up projects for myself and pushing work that I have already completed, even further which better honed my skills in design and the software I used to create it. Eventually, I got an offer from a more established company based in my home town, so I decided to design for Empire Life on a contract basis. This allowed me to work my way into a a better position while giving me time to hone my skills even further. Eventually starting a full time position with Empire Life and working on building their brand for 7 years. Since then I have been working freelance at a full time capacity for brands and agencies like Dell, Telus, 1dea Design & Media, Jacobus Design and many others across Canada.
My creative approach is to find points of passion behind the idea I’ve been assigned or am interested in. I do several iterations on each point and usually end up refining the one I find most engaging.
For me, I am constantly trying to find ways to engage people in what they are looking at, a way to arrest your audience. It’s a way to plant a little bit of desire in their hearts; a yearning to see further and learn more about your idea. With an obsessive attention to detail and a love for design I strived for the best from my work. Ultimately, it’s about creating memorable images.
